Lady Canes Advance to Second Round of Region

A double win for the Lady Canes and a no-hitter for pitcher Bailey Jenkins.

Playing in Elberton against Elbert County on Wednesday, September 25, the Lady Canes played back to back games, one at 4 p.m. and one at 6 p.m., winning both.

The second game found the Lady Canes victorious with a score of 5-4. Bailey Jenkins pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, walking zero and striking out five during the second game.

Taking the lead first with a run in the bottom of the first, catcher Jasmine Stone started things off with a fly ball single to left field. Avery Barton, batting two for three, hit a line drive double to score Stone.

The second inning gave the lead to Elbert County as they scored two runs.

The bottom of the third returned the lead to the Lady Canes after a lead off single for Treauna Jacobs. A steal to second and another single by Stone scored Jacobs. Kate Robinson added a sacrifice fly to left field to score Stone.

The Lady Canes kept their bats going with Stone reaching on a ground ball error in the bottom of the fifth and a single by Barton that scored Stone. Robinson came to the plate hitting a fly ball double to left field, sending Barton across home plate, giving the Lady Canes two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Elbert County tried a comeback, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough. The Lady Canes took the win 5-4.

Stone and Barton both contributed two hits with Robinson and Jacobs each having one hit.

The 4 p.m. game was a no-hitter for Jenkins. Taking the win 8-0, Jenkins was masterful on the mound, allowing no hits, no runs, striking out five and walking one.

The Lady Canes had six hits total for their 8-0 victory, their first hit coming in the top of the second with a single by Jenkins after a walk by Allie Jones. Jenna Parrish, with a hard line drive reached on an error while Jones scored the first run of the game for the Lady Canes.

The top of the third was a big one for the Lady Canes. Starting off with a single by Stone and Barton getting on base after being hit by a pitch, Robinson reached on a sacrifice and an error. Stone scored on a steal of home. A single by Jones scored Barton. Jenkins was hit by a pitch to get on base and courtesy runner Makayla Wages entered the game for Jenkins. A fielder’s choice by Azure Guli scored Robinson. An error by the Elbert County shortstop allowed Jones to score. The fifth run of the inning found Wages tagging home plate after Taylor Rutledge hit into a double play. The end of the fifth found the Lady Canes up 6-0.

The top of the fourth gave the Lady Canes two more runs. Robinson started the hits with a line drive single to right field. A walk by Jones advanced Robinson and a double by Jenkins scored Robinson and advanced Jones to third. A sacrifice fly by Guli scored Jones for the Lady Canes final run of the game, giving them the win, 8-0.

Stone, Robinson, Jones and Parrish each had one hit with Jenkins providing two hits. Guli was good for two RBIs with Jones, Jenkins and Rutledge good for one RBI each.

The Lady Canes advanced to the second round of the Region AA tournament that was to be played yesterday, Oct. 2, at Banks County.
