Canes Lose to Wildcats, Prepare for War Eagles
Playing at home last Friday, the Monticello Hurricanes dropped to 0-5 for the season with a 49-20 loss to the Rabun County Wildcats.
The game kicked off with Rabun County receiving in Canes’ territory at the 18 yard line. After a fair catch, the Wildcats reached the end zone quickly on a 65 yard run for the first of five touchdowns.
After starting in Rabun territory at the two yard line, the Canes made it downfield for their first touchdown at the end of the first quarter. The point after was good, giving the Canes seven on the score board. Two more touchdowns and another extra point gave the Canes 20 points.
Head-to-head had the Canes with 386 total offensive yards and Rabun with 407.
Quarterback Keyshawn Ammons had 11 pass completions out of 22 attempts for a total of 130 passing yards and an average of 11.8 yards with one passing touchdown to Jackson Taylor, two interceptions and one fumble.
Offensively, Mario Greene carried the ball 27 times for 181 yards for an average of 6.7 yards and a long run of 35 yards. Ammons averaged 3.5 yards per carry, carrying the ball 11 times for 39 yards total. Jaylon Mitchell carried the ball for 35 yards, averaging 5 yards per carry on 7 total carries and Graeme Williams added one yard on two carries.
Receiving for the Canes were Williams for five receptions and 78 yards, Matt Cain with two receptions for 18 yards, Mac Barton with one reception for 19 yards and Taylor, Greene, Jordan Mitchell, and Jacarian Grier each with one reception for nine yards.
Getting in on many of the Canes’ tackles were Jaylon Mitchell with four solos and one assist tackle, Kendarius Hicks with four solos and three assists, Akiren Walker for three solo tackles and four assists and Tyler Wages with two solos and three assist tackles.
Williams had an interception land at the goal and Ardarius Benton had one interception with a 17 yard run.
Special teams kicker Barton had four punts for 124 yards. His longest punt was 37 yards. On returns for special teams, Greene had three kick-off returns for 75 yards, averaging 25 yards per return. Daa’ylan Miller and Michael Clendenin each had one kickoff return for five and seven yards respectively. Samuel Nunez kicked two of three point afters between the goal posts.
Greene and Ammons had rushing touchdowns and Taylor had one touchdown reception.
Monticello (0-5) will travel to Putnam County (1-4) to play the War Eagles in a AA Region 8 game Friday, Oct. 4. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
