Lady Canes Come Up Short in Elberton
In a game where both teams had seven hits, the Lady Canes fell 5-3 to Elbert County last week.
Elbert County was on the scoreboard first with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third, with two outs and Treauna Jacobs on base after a walk, the Lady Canes scored their first run. A bunt by catcher Jasmine Stone sent Jacobs to third base and a fly ball double to left by shortstop Avery Barton, sent Jacobs home.
The fourth inning also gave a run to the Lady Canes, giving them the lead 2-1. A lead off walk by second baseman Allie Jones and a sacrifice by Bailey Jenkins, advanced Jones to second. Third baseman Hailey Tripp, with a fly ball single to right field, sent Jones home for the run. Tripp, after a steal to second base, was left standing at the end of the inning.
Keeping Elbert County scoreless in the bottom of the fourth with three up, three down, the Lady Canes, also going three up, three down were kept scoreless in the fifth. The bottom of the fifth was all Elbert County. A wild pitch, a single, three fielder’s choice at bats, a double, a walk and an error gave three runs to the opponent.
In the top of the sixth inning, Jones, on base after a fly ball single to left field, advanced to third after an error on a hard hit ground ball to second base by Jenkins. Elbert County’s second error, after a hit to the pitcher by Tripp, allowed Jones to score. A fielder’s choice bunt by Taylor Rutledge advanced Jenkins to third and Tripp to second. Marley Sands, in as a courtesy runner for Jenkins, and Rutledge were left stranded on base after a line drive out to the shortstop by Jacobs.
One more run in the bottom of the sixth by Elbert County gave them the win. Losing pitcher was Jenkins, going six innings and striking out one, allowing two walks, seven hits and five runs. Two hits each by Stone, Barton and Jones and one hit by Tripp fueled the runs for the Lady Canes. Tripp had two RBIs and Barton had one. The Lady Canes allowed five errors to Elbert County’s two. The Lady Canes are currently 1-2 in region games, winning against Oglethorpe County and losing to Union and Elbert counties.
Upcoming games for the Lady Canes include a home game against Banks County today, Sept. 5, an away game on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in Social Circle, and hosting Locust Grove on Tuesday, Sept. 11. All games start at 5:30 p.m.
