One Win, One Loss for Lady Canes

At their first home game Monday, the Lady Canes did not disappoint. In front of their entourage, they took on the Lady Devils of Jackson High School, winning 7-2.

Keeping the Lady Devils to three up, three down, in the first inning, the Lady Canes scored their first run. After a stand up double to left field by Avery Barton, Kate Robinson followed with a just over the fingertips line drive to the second baseman, scoring Barton. Both Jasmine Stone and Bailey Jenkins also had the Lady Devil’s second baseman in their sights, hitting hard hit line drives, both caught by the second baseman.

Both teams scoreless in the second inning, the Lady Canes came back to score two more runs in the bottom of the third. Stone lead off the inning with a single to right field, followed by a well hit homer by Barton.

Lady Cane Jenna Parrish singled on a ground ball to the short stop in the bottom of the fourth, but was left stranded at the end of the inning.

The fifth inning brought the Lady Devils their only two runs, scoring after a ground ball error and a line drive double to center field scored their first run, followed by a fly ball double to center field to score their second run. The Lady Canes struck back, scoring two more runs. Haley Tripp reached on an error to start off the bottom of the fifth, advancing to third after a single by Stone. A wild pitch scored Tripp and advanced Stone. A single by Robinson scored Stone.

The Lady Canes advanced their cause in the bottom of the sixth inning, keeping the Lady Devils scoreless, while scoring two more runs their own.

With two outs and Haley Tripp on first after hitting in to a fielder’s choice, Stone tripled a line drive to center, scoring Tripp. Another single by Robinson sent Stone home.

Three up, three down in the top of the seventh sealed the win for the Lady Canes.

Pitching strong, Jenkins took the win for the Lady Canes, going seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out six and walking none. Lexi Henry took the loss for Jackson, lasting six innings, and allowing seven runs on nine hits, striking out three.

Parrish, Stone, Robinson and Barton combined for nine total hits, proving too much for the Lady Devils. Stone, Robinson, and Barton, Barton hitting a home run, all had multiple hits. Robinson led runs batted in (RBI) with three. The Lady Canes gave up three errors to the Lady Devils one.

Last Thursday, playing away in Macon, the Lady Canes had a hard loss to Howard 2-1 in the final play of the game.

Pitcher Jenkins of the Lady Canes took the loss, going nine innings, with two strike outs and allowing eleven hits and one run. Elle Doolittle of Howard grabbed the win, going 10 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out 17.

The game, going to the final out over 10 innings, began with a run being driven in on a single by Lady Canes’ shortstop Barton, after catcher Stone lead off the inning with a fly ball double and a steal to third. Howard was kept to three up, three down by Jenkins in the bottom of the first.

The second inning allowed no runs for the Lady Canes after a walk for Marley Sands and a single by left fielder Azure Guli. They were left stranded on base with no runs scored. Howard followed with their first run after two singles and an error by the Lady Canes.

The Lady Canes threatened to score with a triple by shortstop Barton in the top of the third. The inning led nowhere, stranding Barton where she started. The bottom of the third fared no better for Howard.

The game remained scoreless for both teams until the bottom of the tenth inning. The Lady Canes went three up, three down in the top of the tenth.

After starting their inning with a single, a walk, and an error by the Lady Canes, Howard scored the winning run, leaving the Lady Canes with the loss, 2-1.

Lady Canes Stone, Barton, Jenkins and Guli totaled up seven hits, including Barton and Guli with multiple hits and Barton leading with three hits in five at bats and one RBI. Howard went for 11 hits to Monticello’s seven, and had no errors while the Lady Canes had three errors, one of those errors advancing the winning run for Howard.

Games on deck for the Lady Canes include an away game today, August 22 at Union County at 5 p.m. and home games on Monday and Tuesday, August 26-27 against GMC and Oglethorpe. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
