Canes Win Scrimmage Over Strong Rock

In a sea of purple, Friday night football in Monticello has returned!

In a scrimmage game last Friday, the Monticello Hurricanes hosted Strong Rock Christian School from Locust Grove and won 20-7.

With band parents behind the concession stands, students overflowing in the cordoned off student section, the band and cheerleaders in place, and parents, grandparents, and alumni scattered throughout the stands, the Canes came ready to play, beating Strong Rock.

Scoreless in the first quarter, the Canes found a path into the end zone first with a touchdown, only 15 seconds into the second quarter. The Canes grabbed the lead and never lost it, scoring two more touchdowns and getting the ball through the uprights for two of the extra points while keeping Strong Rock to one touchdown and one extra point.

Coach Rydell Jackson praised the defensive leaders from Friday including Mario Greene, who had an interception late in the second quarter, Jacarion Grier, Mac Barton, and the entire defensive line.

“Offensively Mario Greene and Jaylon Mitchell had rushing touchdowns at the running back position and Keyshon Ammons threw a touchdown pass to Mac Barton,” he said. “The offensive line paved the way for over 200 yards rushing.”

Put on your purple and head out to the first game of the season, played at home, scheduled for this Friday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m. against Mt. De Sales. Home games will continue to be played at Rose Bowl field until the new stadium is finished.
