Lady Cougars Season Opener Rained Out
The 2019 season opener for the Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team was rained out Monday.
The Lady Cougars were scheduled to play at Fullington Academy in Pinehurst but the game was called off early Monday afternoon. Piedmont will host Georgia Force today, Aug. 8 at 5 p.m.
After advancing to the state championship series in 2018 the squad is hoping to make another deep run in the state tournament which they won in 2017.
First-year head coach Joe Johnson said the team’s players have worked hard throughout the summer and are eager to begin playing games.
Madison Johnson is the team’s lone senior for the season. Juniors include Haley Ann Frank, Jayden Young, Melenie Karoffa and Jacey Morgan. Sophomores competing for the Lady Cougars will be Fleming Sealy, MaLynne Webb, Hayden McLendon and Maddie Waddleton. Freshmen on the team include Emily McEwen, Dakota Floyd, Haiden Crews, Alisa Gilroy and Abby Arnold.
Eighth graders include McKayla Arnold, Bailey Mobley and Ellie McCart.
Piedmont’s varsity softball team will also compete at Windsor Academy in Macon on Monday at 6 p.m.
The Middle School Lady Cougars were also rained out Monday for their game against Fullington.
The middle school team won a scrimmage against Jasper County Middle School last week. Team members for the 2019 squad include eighth graders McKayla Arnold, Ellie McCart and Bailey Mobley. Seven graders include Marissa Holder, Emily Whitwell, Jayleigh Vaughn and Carlie Wilbanks. Sixth graders competing for the Middle School team are Kristen Gilroy and Carly Meredith.
The middle school team will also play at Windsor Monday afternoon.
