Jasper Courthouse Is ‘Secure’
Persons who have not been to the courthouse in the last few weeks, should be prepared to encounter new security procedures.
The new security measures come after recommendations made from a joint security evaluation conducted by the Superior Court Judges Administration and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, said Sheriff Donnie Pope.
“The new security measures are somewhat overdue and a welcome addition for much of the staff working in the courthouse,” says Sheriff Pope. The safety of our citizens, judges and other occupants at the county Courthouse is a high priority for our Sheriff’s Office.
“Our Courthouse is the last one in our 25 county district, and one of the last in the entire state, to integrate metal detectors and check-points at the main entrance. Much of the new equipment has been purchased with money supplemented by the state from the Superior Court Judges Administration.
Anyone wanting to conduct business at the Courthouse must enter through the front door. The handicap access located on the ground floor will still be accessible with a request buzzer located beside the handicap entrance door.
The sheriff requests for those coming into the courthouse to please be prepared to have all bags and belongings checked for weapons. “If you question the accessibility of an item, leave it in your vehicle. If any of the items are not allowed inside the Courthouse, you will be asked to return them to your vehicle,” he said.
“Several citizens have already noticed and encountered the new measures. We ask for your patience as these transitions are coordinated. It is our intention to maintain the traditional hometown atmosphere at the courthouse our citizens have become accustomed to by having courteous, accommodating deputies assisting at the entrance. Serving and protecting our community is our number one goal, and we appreciate your support and cooperation,” added Sheriff Pope.
