Lady Cougars To Begin Workouts for New Coach

The Piedmont Academy softball team will look to remain one of the top programs in the GISA Class AA division this fall.

The Lady Cougars will have a new head coach in Joe Johnson for the new campaign. Johnson has traveled thousands of miles coaching travel softball teams.

“I have coached travel fast-pitch softball on all levels for the past 10 years,” Johnson said. “I have been involved with some of the largest organizations of the sport.”

The coach’s daughter, Madison, will be the lone senior for the Lady Cougars. She has been involved with the program since she was in the sixth grade and is one of the top home run leaders.

Piedmont’s new coach said he would begin working one-on-one with players next week as well as smaller groups.

“I am trying to get a handle on the talent we have,” Johnson said. “I am already familiar with the older players since my daughter is in the program. We have a very solid ninth grade class coming in with good talent. I am excited but there will probably be some growing pains.”

Johnson described himself as an “energetic coach” who does not like to lose.

“I am well-traveled and have given softball lessons for years,” the coach said.

The Lady Cougars will open the new season July 26-27 at a tournament hosted by Windsor Academy. The team will then travel to Fullington Academy on August 5.

Piedmont finished as state-runner up in 2018 after winning the state title the previous season. Seven players have graduated from the 2018 team.
