Cougars Working for New Football Season
The new football season is just around the corner and new Piedmont Academy head coach Will Johnson knows each day is important in terms of preparation.
After being promoted last month Johnson said he has been pleased with how offseason workouts have gone so far. Approximately 20 players worked during May and more will be joining now that baseball season is complete.
Cougar players will work four days a week during June with weight and agility training.
“After that we will look at moving more into the playbook,” the coach said. “It has been great seeing how the players have worked the last three weeks.”
Johnson has also completed his coaching staff for the 2019 season. The head coach said he will work with quarterbacks and receivers and be the offensive coordinator. Matt Britt will be the new defensive coordinator working with the linebackers.
Michael Wilson will work on both sides of the football with the running backs and defensive secondary. Glade Tuggle is handling the offensive and defensive lines.
“It is good to see the excitement building,” Johnson said. “It was great to see all the work the players have already put in during voluntary speed and agility drills.”
Johnson is a 2010 graduate of Robert Toombs Academy in Lyons. He played quarterback in high school and that position for one season at Valdosta State before moving to tight end. Johnson was part of the 2012 VSU Division II national title team and graduated in 2014. He also coaches the boys basketball team and golf team.
Piedmont will host Fullington for a preseason scrimmage on August 16 before opening the regular season August 23 at John Hancock Academy. The Cougars will then travel to Monsignor Donovan for an August 30 contest.
