Cougar Sam Wright To Play College Baseball

After helping the Piedmont Academy baseball team to another standout season Sam Wright is now set to continue his athlete and academic careers.

The senior signed to play for Gordon College during a ceremony held Piedmont last week. Wright helped the Cougars to an undefeated region record in 2019 and was a key part of the team advancing to the GISA Class AA state semifinals.

“Sam is going to do very well at Gordon,” said coach Colt Spivey. “He had several options but felt this was the best route for him.”

Wright was one of the top pitchers for the Cougars and the GISA this spring. He was the starter in game one of the state semifinal series against Terrell Academy (see related story). The senior was also one of nine Piedmont players named All-Region.

“He has been a great player for us,” his coach said. “The program will miss his leadership and ability.”

Wright was recently selected for the GISA All-Star baseball game to be played this Saturday. He was joined at his recent signing by his mother Pam. Wright’s father Ernie was unable to attend the ceremony.

Wright’s teammates, classmates, coaches as well as other school officials were also at the signing.
