Hurricane Baseball Begins Soon

The Monticello Hurricane varsity baseball squad was to begin its 2019 season this week with a non-region road game at Stratford as Head Coach Chris Jenkins expressed “cautious optimism” about the coming season.

“We’re cautiously optimistic about the season,” said the head coach. “We may have overachieved a little bit last year with starting six, sometimes seven, freshmen.”

“The team suffered three one-run losses in region play, and had we found a way to pull through in those games, we would’ve finished the season tied for first. Hopefully falling just short of the playoffs will inspire this group but we’ll need some leadership, and the willingness to put in extra effort, to get over the hump.’

The varsity squad returns a solo senior Hunter Duke who will be joined by juniors Matt Cain, Cody Hood, Kristian Kelly, Ben Lynch, Blane Marat, Tristan Reid, and Tyler Wages. The squad also includes sophomores Mac Barton, Baylor Edge, Justyn Fields, Cole Hays, Tristian Humphreys, Trent Maddox, Dalton Ramey, Maseson Schandera, Michael Vandervoet, Graeme Williams and freshmen Austin Dean, Timber Edge, Ethan Lynch, Myles Proctor, Sammy Puckett, Anderson Reid, and Jackson Taylor.

The season opens with seven non region games before the squad begins

region play against Lamar County.

The varsity squad is set to travel to Alcovy High School on Friday, Feb. 15 and then onto Monroe Area Tuesday, Feb. 19, both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, Feb. 21 the team will travel to Rockdale High for a 5:55 p.m. contest.
