Hurricanes Fall 47-8 to Blue Devils

It was a difficult night for the Monticello Hurricanes as they lost to the Elbert County Blue Devils 47-8.

The Canes fall to 3-5 for the season after losing to the Blue Devils.

The night started out on a positive note after a 19 yard run by #33 Chance Hope. This run gave the Canes the momentum to score an early touchdown as #14 Jay Fleetwood rushed into the end zone. To put icing on top of the cake, #6 Mac Barton rushed in for a two point conversion to give the Canes an 8-0 lead.

Now it was time for the Canes defense to shine, as they forced a Blue Devil three and out after Fleetwood forced an incompletion. Back to back punts for both teams led to the Blue Devils receiving the ball late in the first quarter near the end zone. However, the Canes defense stayed strong as they kept the Blue Devils out of the end zone. Sadly, a successful field goal by the Blue Devils led to both teams entering the second quarter with points on the board. The Canes, leading 8-3, hoped to keep their momentum up.

The second quarter proved to be more of a challenge for the Canes than the first quarter. An early Blue Devil touchdown in the second quarter led to them to grabbing the lead from the Canes. A tough Blue Devil defense forced a Canes punt. With another opportunity to put points on the board, the Blue Devil’s offense scored a late touchdown. The two Blue Devil touchdowns in the second quarter had the Canes trailing at halftime.

After receiving the second half kickoff, the Blue Devils charged down the field and put another seven points on the board. Another Canes punt gave the Blue Devils another opportunity to put points onto the board. The Blue Devils capitalized on this opportunity again as they extended their lead after breaking the goal line again. To end the quarter, the Blue Devils trotted into the end zone for the third time as the clock hit zero. The Canes wrapped up a difficult quarter trailing by a score of 39-8.

It was a short final quarter of play on Friday night. The Blue Devils entered the end zone for the final time early into the fourth quarter. After a punt by the Canes, the time on the clock expired with the Canes falling to the Blue Devils.

On offense for the Canes, Fleetwood led the Canes for rushing yards with eight carries for 52 yards. On the opposite side of the ball, #2 Jamel Gude led the Canes with 11 tackles.

The Canes play their final home game of the season against the Banks County Leopards on Friday, Oct. 26. Come out to support the Canes for kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Friday night is a truly special night for all of Monticello as the Canes possibly play the last home game at Rose Bowl Field. On top of this emotional night, the Canes will honor Senior Night. The Canes hope to take the victory on this special night against the Leopards.
