Nancy Cullum Gets 11 To Win Weekly Contest

KEITH ESTES (L), NANCY CULLUM

It was a tough week for Monticello News football contest players, with a large number of players getting only seven right.

It only took 11 right to win the contest, and Nancy Cullum was the only player with as many as 11 right. Because she is the winner, she gets her named added to the Grand Prize Honor Roll.

Three people got 10 right—Ed Hall, Joanne Jordan, and Bobbie Jean Ozburn, and everyone else got nine or less correct out of 15 games listed.

It was a week of upsets, so it’s no wonder it was difficult for contest players.

Sometimes a game that looks like a sure bet is anything but, and it throws off the whole week. This was a weekend full of upsets in the college ranks. Nine of the top 10 teams in the country took the field this past Saturday. Five of them lost. The results were reflected in last week’s football contest.

You could say Halloween came early for contestants. It was absolute carnage, total chaos, a proverbial bloodbath.

College football fans have seen it time and time again—the dreaded bounce back opponent. LSU took their first loss of the season at Florida and had a chance for redemption at home against Georgia. The Tigers took full advantage of the opportunity and dismantled the second-ranked Dawgs, sending Georgia back to Athens with their tail between their legs.

Georgia Tech fans couldn’t even enjoy watching the Bulldogs get whipped in Baton Rouge as their team took one on the chin as well. Georgia Tech was outscored 21-0 in the third quarter as Duke racked up 500 yards of offense and 30 first downs on their way to a 28-14 victory over the Jackets.

The Blue Devils, who used to be a perennial ACC doormat, have now beaten Tech in four of the last five meetings. This proud program seems to have bottomed out under Paul Johnson and his stale old triple option. Now sitting at 3-4 on the season, each loss has the Yellow Jacket contingent growing more and more restless.

Tennessee was considered a 16 point underdog on the road at Auburn. There is no question that Tennessee has been bad, sometimes flat out awful under first year head coach Jeremy Pruitt. But the savviest of pickers would have looked at the previous week when Auburn was blown out by Mississippi State and recognized that Auburn should not be favored by 16 over anybody. Tennessee pulled off the upset on the plains and sent Auburn tumbling out of the top 10.

On the other hand, there wasn’t as much reason to doubt Penn State. They took Big 10 favorite Ohio State to the wire two weeks ago. Surely Michigan State couldn’t come into Happy Valley and knock off the Nittany Lions, especially when they would be looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the vaunted Buckeyes. However, with 19 seconds left on the clock, Felton Davis caught a 25 yard touchdown to give the Spartans a 21-17 victory.

You can close the book on Washington’s hopes of making the college football playoffs. They took a close loss to Auburn to start the season and were knocked off when they travelled to Oregon. Wisconsin is another team that can comfortably say “there’s always next year.” Michigan blew out the Badgers in Ann Arbor. Texas A&M pulled out a close game on the road in a back and forth contest against South Carolina. Contest pickers can breathe a sigh of relief and put a brutal college slate in the rear view mirror.

Hopefully this week will be easier for contest players. Whoever gets the most right, subject to the tie-breaker, will pick up a $25 prize from MDHVAC, sponsor of the week. All players getting 12 or more right will have their names added to the Grand Prize Honor Roll for a chance at four premium tickets to the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Hopefully, the mail will run this Thursday, and everyone will get their paper on time and can enter. Remembers entries must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 19. Bring to 247 West Washington Street; fax to 706-468-6576, or e-mail info@themonticellonews.com.
