Lady Canes Beat Lamar, Advance In GHSA State Tournament

The Lady Hurricanes defeated Lamar County during the first round of the Georgia High School Association’s state playoffs last week.

Over the span of three days due to conditions surrounding Hurricane Michael, the Lady Canes prevailed 18-4 on Wednesday before polishing off Lamar 11-9 on Friday.

“The first game against Lamar was probably the most impressive hitting performance I’ve seen out of one of our teams,” noted Head Coach Chris Jenkins of last Wednesday’s game.

“Just an outstanding approach from the top of the order to the bottom. In game two we swung it well enough, late in the game, to pull out the win. Early game defense made it much closer than it should have been. Not necessarily errors, but plays that our girls are more than capable of making.”

“We’ll have to clean that type of stuff up if we want to beat a good Pepperell team,” he concluded.

The Lady Canes were scheduled to host Pepperell High School Wednesday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the second round of state. Pepperell, a fourth seed from Region 7, defeated South Atlanta, a first seed from Region 6. If Monticello wins the best of three series against Pepperell they head to Columbus next Thursday, Oct. 25 to compete in the three day finish to the AA title.

The Lady Canes won both games Wednesday against Pepperell.

The Lady Canes would play the winner of the Vidalia/Fitzgerald competition first up in Columbus.

In other updates around the 8AA region, Social Circle advanced to play Chattooga this week, Banks advanced to play defending champions Rockmart this week while Union County was defeated by Heard County last week.
