11 Is Enough for Win in Tough Contest Week

Ties have been a pain this year. This is the first time since 1971 there has been a tie in each of the first two weeks of the NFL season. They both wound up on the contest. And in the previous week, Piedmont Academy’s game ended in a tie. So three weeks of football contest…three weeks where only 14 games counted. It will get easier folks.

This week, however, 11 right was the most anyone got, except for a one-year-old player who was disqualified because you must be at least five-years-old to play.

Five people had 11 right, and Brandon McElheney of Macon was this week’s winner. He was the closest on the tie-breaker, guessing 49 points would be scored in the Union County, Monticello game. Sixty points were scored, but nobody guessed more than 49. Others with 11 right included Matt Cain, Ady Dahod, Cathy Davis, and Turkey Holland.

Mr. McElheney is the son-in-law of Gary and Susan Bower of Monticello. Mr. Bower, picked up the $25 prize for Mr. McElheney from Clint Currie at NAPA Auto Parts, sponsor of the week, along with Perimeter Mini-Storage.

The tie was not the only thing unpredictable in last week’s contest. Virtually no contest players predicted LSU to beat Auburn, and many Georgia Tech fans were disappointed. And there were those that had no faith in Atlanta, who defeated Carolina Maybe a tie can be avoided this week. Who knows:

Anyway, all anyone has to do to compete is go to page 10 of today’s paper, fill out the contest, or put your answers on another piece of paper, and submit it to The Monticello News office, 247 West Washington Street, no later than 5 pm. Friday, Sept. 21.

Entries may be submitted in person, by fax to 706-468-6576 or by e-mail to info@themonticellonews.com Whichever way it is submitted, the entry form must be here by 5 p.m. Friday to be judged.
