Lady Canes Win Big

The Monticello Lady Hurricanes varsity and junior varsity softball squads were rained out on the road at Mary Persons Monday.

In a rare appearance dueling the same opponent on the same day this season, both ladies’ squads were halted due to weather. The JV squad actually started their contest taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning before the contests were called due to weather.

The last contest the varsity squad played was a heavy hitter last Thursday at Oconee County High School in Watkinsville where the Lady Canes dominated the six time softball state championship school with a 14-4 victory.

Mackenzie Abbott was 3 of 4, Avery Barton and Kate Robinson were 2 of 4 while Bailey Jenkins and Madison Abbott drove in three runs each. Mia Jenkins, Marley Sands and Kaitlyn Wilbanks also had RBIs.

Coach Chris Jenkins was rather pleased with his team’s large margin of victory against a program with such a stellar softball history. But the coach is looking ahead to the days and weeks to come as the varsity squad preps to open 8AA region play today, August 23 by hosting Union County at 5 p.m.

The Lady Canes, ranked second in the region during preseason, are currently 6-2, while the Union County Lady Panthers are 5-3. After hosting non-region opponent Union Grove on Monday, August 27, the Lady Canes will compete in a four game region stretch against Oglethorpe (3-4), Elbert (1-6), Banks (4-0), and Social Circle (2-1).

The JV and varsity Lady Canes were to host Ola in a home competition Wednesday before hosting Union County and Union Grove. The three day home streak gives Lady Canes fans a good opportunity to support the program without traveling far.
