Ga.-Pacific To Close Local Plant

Some 100 people will lose their jobs over the next 90 days as Georgia-Pacific prepares to close its thin Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) plant in Monticello.

The plant has two sections—the MDF side and the finishing side, and Rick Kimble, speaking for Georgia-Pacific, said it would depend on orders as to how quickly it actually closes.

He said “We will do everything we can to assist the employees in finding a job elsewhere.”

Georgia–Pacific laid off some 315 workers here in 2008, and another 40 in 2010, leaving only 20 employees at that time. According to Mr. Kimble, this will cease all operations in Jasper County for the company.
