Mrs. Mattie Pearl Marks Smith
A celebration of life for Mrs. Mattie Pearl Marks Smith, who died July 7, 2018, was held Friday, July 13, at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Monticello. Rev. Dr. Jimmy Horton officiated. Burial was in South View Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born in Marshville, Ga. on December 19, 1941, to the late Dollie B. Marks and Charlie Marks. She was educated in the Jasper County school system. At a very young age, she moved to Atlanta where she met and married the late Grady J. Smith of Newborn. Their union produced two daughters.
Mattie Pearl gave her life to Christ and joined Springfield Baptist Church in Monticello at an early age. She provided a solid foundation for her daughters by teaching them to be self-reliant and the values of earning an honest living. She also instilled in them the importance of obtaining an education. It’s obvious that she lived her life and raised her daughters from the book of Proverbs.
Mattie Pearl retired from Proctor & Gamble after being employed 29 years. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Mattie Pearl was preceded in death by her siblings, Samuel Marks, Charlie Marks, Jr., Harry Marks, Leatha Mae Hill, and Willie James Marks.
She is survived by two daughters, Sheila Smith and Bridgette Smith Norris; two grandchildren, Amber Nykole Norris and Malcolm Xavier Norris. She also leaves behind to cherish her memories one sister, Beatrice Marks Sanders, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
