Council Reviews City Manager Applications

The Monticello City Council met in a called meeting Monday to review city manager applications, discuss merit raises, and determine if an interim city manager was needed.

After much discussion, council agreed to ask current City Manager Doug White to stay until October 31, or until a replacement can be found. Mr. White apparently has applied for the position which was advertised, but wants to remain part time. Apparently he tendered his resignation earlier this month, but the mayor was going to talk with him Tuesday morning and see if he would stay on.

Mayor pro-tem Stone Workman said the city currently has 14 projects in the works, and really needs Mr. White to stay. Councilman Larry Thurman echoed Mr. Workman’s remarks saying he has spearheaded several projects, and would like to see him stay until the end of the year.

Cynthia Miller expressed her disappointment at Mr. White tendering his resignation with less than 60 days notice as his contract dictates.

The city will continue to advertise the position on governmental websites until position is filled or no later than August 31. Of the applications received already, the council eliminated several and kept seven in consideration.

The council also reviewed several employees who are eligible for merit raises. That is compensation over the three percent across the board raise given all employees. After some discussion, the merit raises were approved.

In other action, the council called for an internal audit to be conducted. Council members apparently are concerned with internal controls among other items.
