Church May Tear Down Historic Building
The Monticello Historic Preservation Commission met last Thursday to consider several applications, one of which was from Monticello Baptist Church. The church wants to purchase property adjacent to the current building on West Greene Street for a Family Life and Youth Education Center for the church.
The church has purchased the immediately adjacent property, but also wants to purchase the property where Meme’s House is located. However, the church does not want the building. After deliberation, the commission agreed that the church would be permitted to demolish the structure provided it occurred no sooner than 90 days from closing and that the church makes an honest effort to find a party interested in relocating the house.
The commission also approved work done to 141 South Warren Street, and work planned for 531 East Greene Street. The commission also approved a new roof at 267 College Street.
The commission also approved work to 336 Persons Street.
The Historic Preservation Commission currently has three members, and only two were present—David Thompson and Tom Shekita. Carnethia Pennamon, a city of Monticello employee serves as clerk.
