William Edwin Hughes

William Edwin Hughes, age 94, of Newborn, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at his residence.

“Ed” Hughes was born in Milledgeville, on September 17, 1923. He was a lifelong resident of Newborn. His parents were the late William Bunyan Hughes and Bertha Jane Martin Hughes.

Ed Hughes served in the U. S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He married the late Evelyn Blackwell Malone Hughes on December 12, 1948. He owned and operated Franklin Veneer Mill in Farrar for over 25 years.

Ed Hughes was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and growing Bonsai trees and African Violets. After retirement, he volunteered in the maintenance department at the Jasper County schools.

He is survived by his children, Diane (Sid) Phillips of North Georgia, William E. “Billy” (Jan) Hughes, Jr. of Waycross, Debbie (Gary) Clark of Newborn and Nellie Jo (Eddie) Clark of Newborn; 17 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Hilda Benton of Macon.

A graveside service as held Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Newborn. Rev. Danny Sorrells officiated.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Genesis Joy House Homeless Shelter, in memory of William Edwin Hughes, 501 Marshall Avenue, Warner Robins, Georgia 31093.
