Charles LaVaughn

Bishop Charles LaVaughn was born February 5, 1933 in Hillsboro, to the parentage of the late Willie and Magnolia (Mercer) LaVaughn. He died June 10, 2018.

A celebration of life was held June 14 at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Monticello. Rev. Dr. Jimmy Horton, pastor, officiated; burial was in South View Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Shon Tripp, Jordan Stewart, Wendel LaVaughn, Alton Standifer, Alvonte Ammons, and Clint LaVaughn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six sisters, Estella, Mattie Pearl, Leann, Mary, Willie Mae and Emma Lizzie; and two brothers, Ulysee and George.

At an early age, he joined Maddox Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. He later moved his membership to the God of Christ under the leadership of the late Overseer Dovie Cherry, the current leader is Bishop Joe L. Ridley. While there he accepted his calling to preach the gospel and became the Presiding Elder of the Body Christ Holiness Church. Being led by God, he joined Holy Nation under the leadership of the late Overseer Rosa Mae Braswell. While there, he was called to the office of Bishop.

In the early 2000s, he established his own ministry, Anointed Word Outreach Ministry in Monticello where he served as Senior Pastor until his health declined.

In December of 1955, he married the love of his life, Evangelist Inell (Thurman) LaVaughn; and, to this union three children were born. Bishop LaVaughn pursued his career; he attended Browns College of Barbering in Atlanta. Bishop LaVaughn opened and operated his own barber shop as a proud black man for over 50 years. Prior to becoming a barber, he was employed by Bibb Manufacturing in Forsyth where he was plant foreman.

Whenever you saw the Bishop you were always greeted with a smile and a joke. One of his favorite quotes was, “Just as show as frost.”

Bishop leaves sweet memories to his wife of 62 years, Evang. Inell LaVaughn; two sons, Charles Trent (Shirley) LaVaughn of Monticello and Al (Tiney) LaVaughn; baby girl, Tara (A.J.) Stewart of Monticello; grandchildren, Tren, Tasha, Derrick, Clint, Al, Alton, Shon, Quincy, Tara, Kyelah, Jordan, Jalen and Jayce; great-grandchildren, Amari, Monica, Jarrett, Jade, Jayden, McKinley, Ta’nyia, and Quincy; God daughter, Cassandra Besely.

Also, siblings, Fred (Christine) LaVaughn, Naomi (Benjamin) Carey and Benjamin LaVaughn; a devoted caregiver, Mrs. Darlene Whidby, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Smith and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
