Code Enforcement Update

The Jasper County Commissioners recently asked Planning and Zoning Director Shane Sealy for an update on several items of concern.

Mr. Sealy responded to the commissioners, who wanted to share the findings with the public.

“The lake located at 1988 Ga Hwy 212W withdrew the application for a text amendment for a tournament lake on Friday, May 4. On Saturday, May 5, code enforcement got a complaint that there was a tournament being held. The code enforcement officer went to the neighbor’s house and observed.

“Code enforcement heard rumors that a residence on Millen Road had applied for a Special Use Permit for motocross racing and that it was denied by the P/Z board. There was never an application for a Special Use Permit and never went in front of the P/Z board. The gentleman has 180 acres and he and all his family compete in motocross. They ride on their property, which they have the right to do.

“They were going to have a southeast regional event there a couple years back and we spoke to the event coordinator and property owner and said this could not happen. They moved the event to another location outside the county.

“The junk cars that were at 33 Edwards Road back in 2015-2016 had a towing business license. The license was given before Mr. Sealy started the job. Once it was obvious that it was more than just a towing business, the business owners were told that they had to get a Special Use Permit for a junkyard and what requirements were necessary.

“Once the permit was denied, the cars started to be taken off. Code enforcement then got a call about some residences having junk cars on it, then proceeded to follow up and got cars removed and now the business is in Newton County.

“The trailer company located at 33 Edwards Road started the company there with out all the proper paperwork. Their business license was suspended until all the proper paperwork was obtained. They currently have a business license and all the proper paperwork.

“The property located at 8676 Ga Hwy 212 West Monticello, Ga has a sign up saying boarding. There has been no boarding at the site. I know he is advertising boarding, but he is aware that he has to obtain a Special Use Permit. We check on this site almost daily.”
