Monticello Civic Club Replaces Kiwanis

Members of the Monticello Kiwanis Club voted recently to end their association with Kiwanis, and continue as the Monticello Civic Club in an effort to better serve the local community.

The affiliation with Kiwanis International cost the local club dues money, and members felt they would rather spend the money locally than sending it to Kiwanis International projects.

Besides the name change, the club voted to change its meeting day, beginning in June to the first and third Thursday of each month. It will continue to meet at Monticello First United Methodist Church at noon, but it will be on the first and third Thursday.

The local club will continue to sponsor the Venison Cook-off, the Jack Yearwood Memorial Pancake Breakfast, and the Les Steele talent showcase and youth art show. These are the three main fund raisers, and proceeds are distributed to various local organizations that serve the children of the community.

Upcoming programs for the Monticello Civic Club include recognition of the students and teachers of the month for Jasper County High School and Piedmont Academy on Monday, April 23. The club will meet on Monday, May 14 and 4-H will provide the program. It will meet again the following week on Monday, May 21 because of the Memorial Day holiday the following week. At that time the valedictorians and salutatorians from each school will be recognized.

The first meeting in June will be June 7, at which time proceeds from the past year will be given to the charities.

Current officers for the club are Les Steele, president; Kathy Mudd, president-elect; Kasey Hall, secretary; Walker Jordan, treasurer, and Robert Cumbie, immediate past president. For more information contact any officer.

New members are always welcome. Please call ahead so there is an accurate head count for meals. Mr. Steele can be reached at leslieasteele119@gmail.com or 706-476-2870.
