Diamond Cougars Now 2-1 in Region

The Piedmont Academy varsity baseball team continued its 2018 region schedule with a 10-5 region win against Windsor Academy on the road last Friday in Macon.

Sam Wright earned the win working five innings while striking out three batters and scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs. Tate Marks worked the final two innings and had four strike outs.

Trailing 2-1 after the fifth inning, the Cougars exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth to take control of the contest. Piedmont added three more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Wright, Owen Brady, Caleb Faircloth and Marks each doubled to help lead the offense. Dawson Coe was 2-for-4 while driving in four runs. Faircloth finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Marks scored two runs.

Clayton Carter, Wright, Faircloth and Marks all had stolen bases.

The Cougars fell in non-region play to Gatewood last Thursday 10-6. Porter, Clay Jones and Zach Spivey handled the pitching duties.

Marks, Porter, Brady, Caleb Coffey, Spivey and Cameron Mobley paced the offense. Coffey and Spivey both homered for Piedmont.

On Tuesday of the week Piedmont returned to region play when it traveled to Thomas Jefferson and fell 1-0.

Marks went the distance allowing only five hits. Coach Wes Tanner said pitching was not the issue Tuesday for the Cougars.

“They had one inning where they strung together three hits and we couldn’t put any together,” the coach said. “We saw one of the better pitchers we will see and Thomas Jefferson had already beaten Brentwood 8-2.”

Finding a way to be consistent offensively will be a priority moving forward for Piedmont.

“We have to find a way to relax and compete at the plate,” Tanner said.

“There is no other way around it. That starts at the top with me. We have to find a way to put competitive at bats together and put pressure on the opposition. We are a young team that just has to continue working to get better.”

Piedmont is set to be back on the field Friday, March 23 against region foe Monsignor Donovan at home beginning at 4:30 p.m.
