Deputies Find Drugs in Vehicle

ITEMS FOUND IN VEHICLE OF MICHAEL JONES OF COVINGTON SATURDAY

A Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with an improper tag last Sunday, March 11, about 11 p.m.

The driver had a juvenile son in the vehicle with him at the time of the traffic stop. A consent search of the vehicle revealed a loaded 9mm handgun, additional magazines and ammunition. Also located inside the vehicle was suspected methamphetamine, suspected Alprazolam pills, suspected marijuana as well as various smoking devices, needles, digital scales and packaging material.

The driver, Michael Jones of Covington, was arrested and charged with no valid insurance, improper tag, possession of drug-related objects, possession of a schedule II substance, possession of marijuana, suspended registration, possession of drugs not in the original container, and possession of drugs with intent to distribute.

Previously, on Friday, March 9, Jasper County deputies received information that an individual had taken firearms and machetes from his home and may be intending on doing a drive-by shooting at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The individual was located several hours later at the Jasper County Courthouse where his estranged wife had gone to in attempts to get a protective order against him.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a pistol, a rifle, several hundred rounds of ammunition as well as large knives, machetes and swords. Douglas Fields of Monticello was arrested at the scene and charged with terroristic threats. He was then transported to a facility for a mental evaluation.

Persons arrested in the last week, and their charges, include:
