Diamond Cougars Fall in Opener

Piedmont Academy baseball coach Wes Tanner is quick to point out that baseball, as much as any sport, is a marathon.

The Diamond Cougars coach also said it will be best to judge the 2018 Piedmont team in May rather than February.

With that in mind, the Cougars opened the new season Tuesday with a 4-1 loss to perennial Class AAA power Bethlehem Christian Academy. Chase Porter homered for the lone run for Piedmont and was also the starting pitcher for the Cougars.

“We are young, young, young,” said Tanner emphasizing the point. “We are still getting our pitchers’ arms into shape. Today is not the day to judge this team on.”

The plan going into the season opener was to use several pitchers, which is what the coaching staff did.

“For many of our players this was their first varsity game,” Tanner said.

The Diamond Cougars will travel to Peachtree Academy today, March 1 at 4:30 p.m.
