Baseball Canes Post Win

Monticello Hurricane varsity baseball earned their first win of the season Tuesday with a 5-2 victory over Monroe Area.

Hunter Duke and Matt Cain split time on the mound. Duke had a solid game with three strikeouts while on the other side of the ball he had two walks, one run batted in (RBI), and three quality at bats (QABs).

Taylor Wages had two hits, Cole Hays and Baylor Edge each had two walks.

It was a good win for the squad after having been defeated by the Monroe team last Wednesday by an eight run margin. In that contest, Monticello struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Monroe who won 9-1.

Edge and Justyn Fields shared the mound. Edge allowed five hits and eight runs over four innings while striking out four. Fields threw for one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Mac Barton and Edge each had a hit; Edge had a walk; Fields had two RBIs; and Tristan Humphreys had two QABs.

Last Thursday, the competition fell Lamar County’s way with a 5-1 win. Duke pitched seven innings allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out four. Barton had three QABs, two walks and two hits while Fields had two walks.

The Canes will travel to Banks County Friday, March 2 for a 5 p.m. contest before hosting Social Circle Tuesday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m.
