Hurricane Teams Sweep Oglethorpe
The Lady Hurricanes of Jasper County High School earned a 42-23 win over region opponent Oglethorpe County Tuesday evening. The region victory takes the girls’ overall record to 8-5 and region record to 1-2 for the season.
In the win, Madison Abbott scored 26 points, Alicia Tripp and Mackenzie Abbott each scored six points.
For the 12 games played thus far this season, offensively Madison Abbott has averaged 22.3 points per game (PPG) with a total of 267 points in 12 games; Mackenzie Abbott has averaged 9.1 PPG with 100 points in 11 games; Alicia Tripp has averaged 5.1 PPG with 46 points in nine games; Alyssa Wilson has averaged 4.8 PPG with 48 points in 10 games; Mackenzie Tripp has averaged 4.6 PPG with 23 points in five games; Lacey Rutledge has averaged 3 PPG in one game; Hallie Tripp has averaged 2.3 PPG with seven points in three games; India Thomas has averaged 1.5 PPG with three points in two games; and Makya West has averaged 1 PPG with two points in two games.
Defensively sophomore A. Tripp stands out with 64 rebounds with Wilson adding 32 more. Mackenzie Abbott added 22, Madison Abbott added 20, Mackenzie Tripp added nine, and West added two.
Prior to Tuesday’s home game, the Lady Canes played in the Mary Persons Holiday Tournament claiming a third place finish with wins over Mary Persons and Upson-Lee. The 58-34 win over the Bulldogs included 30 points from Madison Abbott, 16 points from Mackenzie Abbott, eight points from A. Tripp, and four from Wilson. A. Tripp also turned in 11 rebounds with Wilson adding five. The Abbotts raked in nine steals with six from Madison and three from Mackenzie.
The Lady Canes loss in triple overtime to Griffn. Madison Abbott had 41 points, six steals, and four rebounds. M. Tripp had 18 points and five rebounds. Mackenzie Abbott had 11 points and three steals. A. Tripp had eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Hurricane ladies got off to a quick start and never relented which resulted in them outscoring the host squad by at least fifty percent in each quarter except for the third.
The Lady Canes follow the undefeated Banks and Elbert county squads as well as a one region loss Putnam team in the current 8AA standings. Social Circle, Rabun, and Oglethorpe remain winless as of Tuesday.
The Canes were also victorius Tuesday over the Oglethorpe Patriots.
During the holiday tournament, the Canes defeated the Mary Persons Bulldogs 88-75 and the Putnam County War Eagles 63-51.
The recent victories take the boys team to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the region.
The Hurricane teams will have homecourt advantage this weekend as they host region mate Rabun County on Friday, Jan. 5 with the varsity only playing beginning at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 6 the Jackson Red Devils will come to town for nonconference action.
