Hurricanes Split Action On the Road
The Monticello Hurricane varsity basketball squads traveled to Banks County Tuesday afternoon for their second region game of the year which followed the cancellation of the initial scheduled date due to weather two weeks ago.
The Banks County squads swept the varsity Hurricanes with the girls losing 62-37 taking the Lady Canes to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the region.
The boys fell 66-61 to the reigining region champions from last season. Though it was a loss, the score proved a valiant effort by the Canes. Banks has beaten each of its opponents thus far this season by 10 or more points. The Canes are now 5-4 overall and 0-2 in the region.
Preceding Tuesday’s games, the squads traveled to Thomson on Saturday with both varsity teams earning victories. The Lady Canes won 37-25 while the Canes claimed a close one, 57-55.
While the squads both managed wins at Thomson, each earned a loss at Elbert County the last Friday in their first region competition. The Lady Canes fell 57-55 in a squeaker that displayed some off balance scoring. With 15 points scored in the first quarter and 10 in the second, the ladies only managed three in the third but rebounded strong in the fourth with 27.
Elbert defeated the Canes by a score of 75-54.
Thomson came to town last week with the Lady Canes earning 46-39 victory while the Canes fell 71-66 in their first foray of the season.
The varsity squads will get a hiatus from action the remainder of this week as the boys prepare for an appearance in the Mary Persons Holiday Classic Tournament next week beginning Wednesday, Dec 27 and concluding Friday, Dec. 29. The Canes will play their first game on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 8:30 p.m. against the host team The Lady Canes will not play in the tournament.
The tournament should prove a good tune-up as the region action will really ramp up after the new year. In a string of 12 competitions that will begin Tuesday, Jan. 2, all but two will be against 8AA region competitors that begin with Oglethorpe and continue with Rabun, Jackson, Social Circle, Putnam, Elbert, and Banks again.
