Bobby Lawrence Greer
Bobby Lawrence Greer, age 87, passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at Jasper Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Greer was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. His parents were the late Frobell Grubbs Greer and Mattie Lawrence Greer.
Mr. Greer served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict driving a truck that carried ammunition to the front lines of battle. He received his associate degree from Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Georgia.
He retired after working 30 years with the Department of Transportation where he reached the position of foreman.
Mr. Greer loved to hunt, and was given the nickname of “Cat Squirrel.” He also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He enjoyed sharing his vegetables with family and friends. He was a huge UGA fan and enjoyed watching and attending the games.
He was an active member of Trinity Praise Center and was an elder and the church treasurer for a number of years. He loved his church family and helped with whatever was needed, from mowing the grass to helping feed families in need. He was a former member of the Monticello First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Belle Pitman Shipman Greer; brothers and sisters, Harold Greer, F. G. Greer, Betty Lane Greer, Virginia G. McMichael, Nell W. Key and Minnie G. Holloway; step-children, Janice Chaffin Jarrett and Linda Shipman Ellis; and granddaughter, Suzette Chaffin.
He is survived by eight nephews and five nieces; step-son, Gary L. Shipman of Monticello; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Gene Wood.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, at Trinity Praise Center in Mansfield. Interment will be held in the church cemetery. Pastor Rick Jackson will officiate.
Serving as pallbearers are Michael H. “Bubba” Greer, Billy Ozburn, Richard Murray, John Hicks, Jim Worley and Joe McMichael. Honorary pallbearer will be Gene Wood.
The family was to receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, prior to the service at Trinity Praise Center in Mansfield.
