Community Band Concert Is Friday

The Monticello Community Band invites everyone to celebrate Christmas Traditions this Friday, Dec. 1, a concert featuring Christmas on the Town Square, Joy to the World, Auld Lang Syne and other holiday favorites.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. in the Jasper County Courthouse main courtroom.

“We are so excited about returning to the courthouse, as this venue is really unique and makes for a very homey atmosphere,” said Jehan El-Jourbagy, director of the band.

The concert will also feature a double quartet representing the Community Cantata, a vocal ensemble that has been performing for over 100 years. This year’s cantata is under the direction of Bonnie Tanner.

Limited discount tickets ($5/person and $15/family) may be obtained at the Chamber of Commerce in downtown Monticello by Thursday, Nov. 30, at 5 p.m. Tickets on Friday and at the door are $10 a person.

The community is asked to come out and support local and regional musicians Christy Bailey, Mary Camp and Betty Lynn Snelling on flute, Kim Savage, Faith Vaughn, Emma Jacobs, David Haisten and Linda Jordan on clarinet, Ralph Hickman and Luke Vaughn on alto saxophone, Les Steele on bass clarinet and Johnny Smith, Erin Buck and Julia Aldridge on baritone.

Also, Chris Savage, Matt Jernigan, Sandra Shockley, Austin Norwood, Tyler Aldridge, Jimmy Jordan and Will McElheney on trumpet, Greg Holder, Jasmine Jernigan, Rodney Pilgrim, Nathanael Mann and Robert Cumbie on trombone, Suzy Mitchell and Cole Smith on horn, Ray Buck and Eduardo Sanchez on tuba, Tyson Harty, Avery Jacobs, Abigail McDaniel and Nancy Gunn on percussion and Jehan El-Jourbagy conducting.

The band is grateful to its “Friends of the Bands,” including chair and music sponsors that will be featured in the concert program and on Facebook.

The band welcomes new members, and the next rehearsal will be Monday, Jan. 8, at 5:30 p.m. in the Jasper County High School band room. 14477 Hwy. 11 North. The band rehearses on the first Monday of each month and provides three concerts a year.

The Monticello Community Band is a 100 percent volunteer organization and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
