Hurricanes Sweep Tigers in Opener
The Monticello Hurricane varsity basketball squads began their 2017-2018 season with a home opener last Friday by sweeping the Greene County Tigers.
The varsity boys, coached by Chris Pennamon, won 58-49 with a full roster of players now that the football season has concluded.
The Lady Canes won their first game 46-41 while being led by coach Shakeirra Middlebrooks.
Junior Madison Abbott led the team in scoring with 26 points; followed by junior MacKenzie Abbott with 11 points; senior Alyssa Wilson had six points; sophomore Alicia Tripp, 2,; and sophomore India Thomas, 1.
The Lady Canes are following up their season opener with action in the Tom’s Thanksgiving Tournament held in Warner Robins.
The ladies played the Warner Robins Demons Monday and lost 46-44 in a squeaker. All quarters were nearly equal with the Lady Canes being outscored by four points in the first half. They made up two points of that deficit in the third by outscoring the Demons 14-12 and the final buzzer sounded with both teams putting up 11 points in the fourth.
The squad was scheduled to face the Rutland Hurricanes Tuesday afternoon in Macon.
The Lady Canes were the only squad playing in the tournament as both teams will see action during the post-Thanskgiving holiday weekend. The teams will host the Jones County Greyhounds on Saturday, Nov. 25 beginning with the junior varsity boys at 4 p.m. and varsity action at beginning at 6 p.m. On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the teams will travel to Greene County to face the Tigers with junior varsity action beginning at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m.
