Lady Cougars Win Region

Piedmont Academy’s varsity softball team dominated region competition this season and officially clinchéd the GISA 1-AA title last week after sweeping Flint River Academy in consecutive days.
In four region games, the Lady Cougars outscored their opponents 46-0 including 8-0 and 12-0 victories against the Lady Wildcats last week. Piedmont also swept LaGrange Academy in region play.
“That stat tells the story,” coach Colt Spivey said. “We went out and did the job. We have played great defense and only committed two errors in our region games.”
This year’s region championship is the third in as many seasons for Piedmont.
In Tuesday’s 8-0 road win against Flint River, Piedmont was paced offensively by Haley Ann Frank, Cassidy Cook and Neely Bradford as each player had two hits. Lucy Tuggle drove in three runs while Alexis Dodson and Fleming Sealy both had one RBI. Madison Johnson drew two walks.
Maddie Morton earned the win going all seven innings in the pitcher’s circle and recording four strikeouts. Morton gave up just two hits.
The Lady Cougars scored one run in the top of the first inning before adding four runs in the top of the fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the top of the seventh.
Tuesday’s region clinching win followed a 12-0 home win Monday as the Lady Cougars pounded out 15 hits. Frank led the team with three hits while Tuggle and Bradford had two each. All three players drove in two runs.
Bradford earned the win allowing only two hits in four innings of work.
The winning ways continued on Sept. 21 for the Lady Cougars as they crushed non-region foe Trinity Christian-Sharpsburg 16-0. Frank, Anglin and Dodson helped lead the offensive onslaught with multiple hits. Anglin drove in six runs while Bradford and Tuggle both had two RBI.
Bradford registered another win in the pitcher’s circle as Trinity managed just one hit. Bradford recorded seven strikeouts.
Spivey noted 2017 has been a quality year for all teams in the Piedmont softball program. The varsity team is now 11-1 overall and when the records of varsity, B-team and Middle School are combined the record is 20-1-1.
“We have a good group of players in our program,” the coach said.
The varsity Lady Cougars returned to action Monday of this week with a 7-0 win against non-region foe Briarwood at home.
Sealy and Anglin both had multiple hits while Frank and Anglin both drove in two runs. Tuggle added another RBI.
Morton went the distance to earn the win recording six strikeouts.
The Lady Cougars are back in action Thursday when they travel to Gatewood in Eatonton for a 4 p.m. contest.
