Wyatt Galloway To Attend Naval Academy

WYATT GALLOWAY (L) SIGNS AS CONGRESSMAN JODY HICE LOOKS ON

Wyatt Galloway, a senior at Piedmont Academy, Tuesday signed a letter to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Congressman Jody Hice was in town to extend the appointment to Mr. Galloway. Appointments are actual invitations to attend an Academy. In other words, an appointment is an offer of admission.

Students who earn an appointment receive a full scholarship to include room, board, tuition, health care, and a stipend. And upon graduation, they become commissioned officers in the United States Armed Forces.

To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated from an authorized person including a member of the United States Senate or the House of Representatives.

There are five service academies: The United States Air Force (USAFA), Naval (USNA), Military (USMA), Merchant Marine (USMMA), and Coast Guard (USCGA) Academies. Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition.

The Congressman said this is quite an honor, reserved for the best and brightest students and, therefore, very competitive. The Congressman and the Academies both consider a nominee’s academic record, extracurricular and athletic activities, physical aptitude, ACT and/or SAT scores, leadership ability and medical qualifications.
