Diamond Cougars Enter Home Stretch
The Piedmont Academy baseball team is now in the final stages of the 2017 regular season but there remains some work to be done before the state playoffs begin.
The Diamond Cougars are now 13-3 overall and 6-1 in region play. Last week’s 7-5 loss to Windsor Academy on the road in Macon prevented Piedmont from wrapping up the region title and a No. 1 seed for the postseason.
Before the game Cougars coach Wes Tanner said Windsor was a much improved team and his words proved true as the Knights built a six-run lead at one point in the contest before holding on for the victory.
Piedmont scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings but could not catch Windsor.
Rob Allgood led the Cougars at the plate going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Tyler Mills was 2-for-4 for two runs and Mack Brady was 1-for-2 with three runs. Michael Edwards was 1-for-3 while Chase Porter was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Sam Wright pitched the first four innings of the contest recording three strikeouts and walking one. Tate Marks then worked two innings and also had three strikeouts.
Windsor scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and then used a four-run bottom of the fourth for some breathing space following by another run in the fifth inning.
Piedmont did get back on the winning track in region play on Tuesday of this week with a 15-4 victory at home against Monsignor Donovan. Tuesday’s win completes a season sweep of the Rams.
The Cougars will host non-region foe John Milledge Academy Thursday (today) at 4 p.m.
Piedmont’s final region game is scheduled for Friday at Brentwood in Sandersville. The Cougars will also play Class AAA Deerfield-Windsor Saturday at home at 1 p.m.
The state playoffs are scheduled to begin May 5.
