Varsity Soccer Cougars Lose at Home
Piedmont Academy’s varsity soccer teams were swept last week at home by Monsignor Donovan.
The Lady Cougars fell 11-1, a tough result coach Michael Wilson said, especially after playing Westminster, another quality opponent, so close.
“We had a couple of bad breaks early and got down 5-0 in the first eight minutes or so and we seemed kind of shell-shocked,” the coach said. “I have to do a better job of preparing the girls with how they start a game and how adversity and bad breaks need to be forgotten if we are to move forward and be successful.”
The Lady Cougars trailed 7-1 at halftime with five of Monsignor Donovan’s goals going in off Piedmont defenders.
“The game was closer than it sounded but with such a young team it’s part of the maturing process,” Wilson said. “Hopefully, we will enjoy spring break and forget the game ever happened.”
Caitlyn Young scored the lone goal for the Lady Cougars on a play early in the first half on a direct kick.
“I thought Mallory Boyd and Sydney Stroud played a good game defensively coming off the bench,” Wilson said. “Taylor Patterson, along with Haley Ann Frank and Mattie Johnston, had a good night battling in the midfield.”
The varsity boys fell to Monsignor Donovan 8-0. Trailing 1-0 with 17 minutes left in the first half, the game suddenly got away from the Cougars as the visiting team scored five goals in six minutes.
“It was similar to what happened to the girls,” Wilson said. “We need to learn to handle adversity and not allow one goal to open a chasm of destruction. We played hard, we just have to continue to improve.”
Caden Clark, Parker Clark and Chris McClain were each praised for their efforts along with Ezra King.
The Piedmont varsity soccer teams will return to play on Tuesday, April 11 hosting Lake Oconee at 5 p.m.
