Piedmont Soccer Begins

Piedmont Academy’s varsity soccer teams began the 2017 season with several matches last week.

The teams opened play against strong Young Americans Christian foes on March 2. The varsity boys fell 10-0 while the Lady Cougars were defeated 8-0.

Piedmont then played three matches in a tournament hosted by Trinity Christian School in Dublin. The varsity boys fell to host Trinity 8-0, Central Fellowship 3-1 and Bleckley County 4-0. Ian Boyd scored for the Cougars against Central Fellowship.

“I am proud of the effort the boys gave,” said coach Michael Wilson. “It’s practically impossible to compete with only 12 healthy players on the roster, but they are giving it their all.”

Brett Bush was praised for his performance in goal.

“This is his first season ever playing the position and first year in soccer since he was very young but he has gotten better each game,” his coach said. “He kept us in our last two tournament matches and, in my opinion, was the best keeper there.”

The Lady Cougars fell to Trinity 2-0 and Bleckley County 1-0 before defeating Central Fellowship 2-0.

“The girls are improving nicely,” Wilson said. “We have improved each game. We possessed the ball more than Bleckley, but we couldn’t finish. We finally put it together in the Central Fellowship match.”

Taylor Patterson had two assists and Emily Mills and Mattie Johnston both scored goals.

“I am really proud of the play of the entire team in the tournament, but especially of Anne Marie Hildebrant, Sydney Davis, Caitlyn Young and Cally Cook,” said Wilson. “We wouldn’t have been able to improve as much as we did if they aren’t out there leading and competing.”

Piedmont’s soccer teams return to action Friday at home against Georgia Military beginning at 6 p.m.
