Diamond Cougars Have Successful Start
Piedmont Academy’s varsity baseball team has played several games early during its 2017 season and has already enjoyed success.
The Diamond Cougars opened the new campaign on March 2 with a 3-0 road win against Class AAA opponent Bethlehem Christian Academy. A masterful pitching performance by Brock Carter helped Piedmont earned the win. Carter, who picked up right where he left off in 2016, recorded 15 strikeouts while going the distance and allowing just two hits.
Offensively, the Cougars were paced by Jay Sheets (2-for-3, two RBI), Wyatt Galloway (1-for-3, one run), Mack Brady (1-for-3, one run) and Tyler Mills (1-for-3.) Brady also had two stolen bases.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third when Piedmont pushed one run across. The Cougars scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Piedmont then traveled to Flint River Academy in Woodbury last Saturday for a pair of games. The Cougars defeated the host Wildcats 13-3 in a game which was a rematch of last spring’s state finals.
Brady earned the win working all five innings and giving up just two hits while striking out five. Michael Edwards was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI while Carter was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Sheets finished 2-for-4 while driving in a run and Sam Wright with 2-for-3 with three RBI. Owen Brady added a 1-for-3 day with two runs and an RBI while Galloway was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI. Mack Brady also went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Piedmont also played Calvary Christian Saturday but fell 8-4 in this contest. Tate Marks, Wright and Edwards shared the pitching duties. Wright had two strikeouts.
Rob Allgood was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and a run while Carter was 1-for-3 with two runs.
The Diamond Cougars return to the field today, March 9 against Windsor at home beginning at 4:30 p.m. Piedmont will then travel to Briarwood Academy on Tuesday, March 14 for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
Note: The March 6 game at Gatewood has been rescheduled for Monday, March 13 at 4 p.m.
