Diamond Cougars Begin Action

After an unprecedented run of success, the Piedmont Academy Diamond Cougars are set for a new season and hope to continue their past winning ways.

Piedmont will open the 2017 schedule today, March 2 against Bethlehem Christian Academy on the road at 4 p.m. The Cougars, who have won three consecutive GISA Class AA state titles, will have familiar names this season but also have to replace some key members of the 2016 squad.

It will be a tough opener as the Knights have also been successful in recent seasons despite still being a relatively young program.

Wes Tanner is now directing the Piedmont program taking over for Daniel Funt who left during the offseason after guiding the program to back-to-back state titles.

Piedmont has been practicing for several weeks and will finally be able take the field for an official game this week.

After the season opener against BCA, the Cougars will play twice Saturday, March 4 at Flint River. The first game will be against the Wildcats at 10:30 a.m. in a rematch of last spring’s state championship series. Piedmont will then play Calvary Christian at 1 p.m.

The early-season action continues Monday for the Cougars as they travel to Gatewood for a 4 p.m. contest.

Piedmont’s Middle School baseball team will play at John Milledge Academy on Monday, March 6 for a 4 p.m. doubleheader and at Gatewood on Tuesday, March 7 at 4 p.m.
