Margaret Jane Sammons

Margaret Jane Sammons, age 90, of Hillsboro, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at the Retreat Nursing Home in Monticello.

Jane was born and raised in Hillsboro, where she lived with her late parents Richard J. Sammons and Margaret Greer Sammons, and sister, the late Sara Lynn “Saralyn” Sammons.

Jane graduated from Monticello High School and then Brenau Academy. She then graduated with a BS degree from Valdosta State University where she also received a Masters of Education degree. She taught school for 12 years in Dacula, Washington Park Elementary for one year and one year at Rutledge Christian Academy. When she retired she returned home to live with her parents and sister.

She was a lifetime member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church, where she was treasurer of her women’s group. She also worked with the Sun Beams as she loved young children. She enjoyed traveling with family all over the USA, reading, working crossword puzzles and watching Matlock.

On the Greer side of her family she is survived by second cousins; James C. Ezell, Jr., John R Carr, Chris Carr, Yulyn Day, India D Yarborough, Rebecca D Camp; and third cousins; Dana C Gotterdam, James C. Ezell, III, Lauren Elizabeth Ezell Kinlaw, Emily Ezell McGann, Saralyn Frances Yarborough, and Phillip B Yarborough.

On the Sammons’ side she is survived by first cousins; Mrs. E. (Mira) Walker Sammons III, William Sammons Piper; and second cousins; Eileen Sammons Zack, Robert Sammons and Patrick Sammons.

Jane was very thankful for her faithful caregivers; Judy Dills, Gwen Catchings and Naomi Carey.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, at the Hillsboro Baptist Church in Hillsboro. Interment will be held in West View Cemetery. Rev. Stan Patterson will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be James C. Ezell, Jr., Wayne Greene, Pat Sammons, Charles Turner, Allen Zack and Marion Stone.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Hillsboro Baptist Church, P. O. Box 86, Hillsboro, Ga. 31064.
