Varsity Cougars Earn a Big Road Victory
Needing some confidence, the Piedmont Academy varsity boys basketball team traveled to Thomas Jefferson Academy last Friday and returned home with a 91-55 victory.
A strong first half pushed the Cougars to the win as Piedmont built a 50-32 lead by halftime. Tate Marks led Piedmont with 16 points (two 3-pointers) while Sam Younker added 15 points (two 3-pointers).
Sam Wright also finished in double figures with 14 points (two 3-pointers). It was a balanced scoring attack for coach Justin Dozier’s team as 10 players scored points.
Dylan Coe finished with nine points while Chris McClain scored eight. Joseph Anderson added five points with Jackson Waddleton and J.T. Webb scoring four each. Payton Wallace added three points.
Haley Ann Frank, who scored a team-high 11 points, led the Lady Cougars, but the team fell to Thomas Jefferson 47-31 in Louisville.
Hailey Hooper made two 3-pointers to finish with six points while Alexis Dodson and Madison Burnham both scored four points for coach Mike McCart.
The Piedmont boys traveled to Monsignor Donovan in Athens Tuesday falling 69-53 despite 16 points by Wright. Sam Younker and McClain both finished in double digits with 10 points while Webb added seven and Tate Marks scored six.
The Lady Cougars were defeated 40-16 Tuesday by Monsignor Donovan. Deacon Robinson and Ava Anglin both scored four points while Burnham and Frank scored two each.
Piedmont’s varsity teams will return to action Friday, Jan. 13 when they host Oak Mountain Academy. The teams will then host Brentwood Tuesday, Jan. 17 in Region 4-AA action. Varsity games both nights begin at 6 p.m.
Piedmont’s middle school games against Thomas Jefferson last Friday were not played due to weather concerns. The middle school teams will host Oak Mountain Friday, Jan. 13 beginning at 3:45 p.m. and host Creekside Saturday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m.
