Canes Sweep Red Devils, Redskins
The varsity Hurricane squads swept basketball competitors this week following a postponement of the weekend action due to inclement weather.
The teams were scheduled to travel to Rabun County in North Georgia Friday but snow and ice conditions prevailed. The Rabun competition has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 24. Saturday’s games at Jackson were postponed until Monday.
The Lady Canes, coached by Shakerria Middlebrooks, earned a 58-36 win Monday against the Lady Red Devils Monday. Tuesday’s 56-35 victory over the Lady Redskins was a region win that takes the squad to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in region competition.
The varsity boys had a 69-67 narrow defeat over the Red Devils Monday. The Canes slightly outpaced the Red Devils in the first half while remaining even throughout the second.
Ashton Bonner scored 18 points, had eight rebounds, and two assists; Matthew Lawson scored 14 points, five assists, four steals, and two blocks; Jakeir Stone had 11 points, four rebounds, and three blocks; C.J. Adams scored 10 points, two rebounds, four assists, and two steals; Jay Fleetwood scored nine points and thre rebounds; Rufus Whitlock turned in two points, five rebounds, and one block; and Kordell Farrar scored three points and one assist.
On Tuesday a final score of 83-68 secured the Canes a region win at Social Circle. Bonner reigned in 30 points while making five of five free throws, grabbing seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals; Malik Crawford scored 21 points, made 12 rebounds, and one steal; Lawson scored nine points, two rebounds, five assists, and six steals; Adams, Fleetwood, Farrar each scored six points.
Next up for the varsity Hurricane squads is a game at region foe Putnam on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a junior varsity boys tip-off at 4:30 p.m. and varsity start of 6 p.m. On Tuesday, the teams travel to Elbert County for a JV boys start at 4:15 p.m. and varsity at 5:45 p.m.
