Charlie R. Franklin, age 97, better known as “C.R.” passed away Thursday Dec. 1, 2016 at Piedmont Newton Hospital.

Homegoing services will be held at Greenwood Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 at noon. Public viewing will be Friday 11 a.m. -9 p.m. Interment will be in Shady Dale Community Cemetery. Rev. Tracey Adams, Rev. E. Swinton officiating and Bishop Nicholas A. Curry pastor/eulogist.

C.R. was born on May 2, 1919 in Shady Dale, Ga. to the late Peter and Corene Franklin. C.R. had seven brothers and eight sisters who also preceded him in death.

C.R. joined Greenwood Baptist Church at a early age under the leadership of Rev. L.G. Aikens. He attended Midway School in Kelly, Ga. In his early years, he had a love for farming, planting vegetables, fishing, and setting out rabbit boxes to catch rabbits. He continued engaging in these activities upon entering adulthood.

In 1949, he met and married Mozilla Alexander who preceded him in death in 2003. To this union, one child was born, a loving daughter affectionately known as “Veronica.”

Most people knew him to be quiet, yet have a gentle spirit who was a friend to everyone and made himself available to help in the community.

This was very evident in the number of haircuts he would give to the young men in the community on a regular basis. He enjoyed working at Georgia-Pacific and retired at Franklin Veneer after 20 years of service. In 2007, he was honored with the Franklin/Jefferson Family Heritage Award by the two families reunion.

He leaves to cherish his memories, one daughter Mary V. Gude; two grandchildren Kimberly Gude and Cory Gude (Sequoia), six great-grandchildren Kia, Julian, Jacob, Reshard, Zoie, and Nasir. The Great- Grands affectionately called him “Grandew.”

Also surviving are a loving niece, Vagelene Reddish, who was raised as a sister, one sister-in law, Isabell Alexander (George); a loyal and devoted friend, Rev. Tracey Adams, and a multitude of nieces, nephews ,and relatives and friends.

Curry & Derricho Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
