Cougars Fall to Flint River
Piedmont Academy’s varsity football team went into last Friday’s road region game against Flint River Academy with a chance to tie for a region title.
By the time the night was over, the Cougars had been locked out of the playoffs completely. Such was the turn of events as Piedmont fell to Flint River 62-13 in Woodbury and saw a chance at the postseason get away when Windsor Academy also defeated Bethlehem Temple in region play.
After tiebreaker scenarios were applied, it would be the Cougars who had their season come to an end.
Despite the loss, it was a big night for Piedmont Academy’s Mack Brady, who rushed for 172 yards on 12 attempts and a score in his final game. Tyler Mills hauled in a 56-yard touchdown pass from Chris McClain for the Cougars’ other score.
Logan Conner also had two receptions for 26 yards and Michael Edwards had two catches for 12 yards.
The difference in the game came in the second quarter when Flint River scored an impressive 42 points.
Defensively, Parker Clark led Piedmont with five solo tackles and six assists. J.T. Webb added four tackles and five assists and one tackle for a loss. Mills had two stops and two assists while Tanner Coppock recorded two tackles and three assists.
McClain, Brady and Conner all had two tackles.
Friday’s loss completed what was a rebuilding season for the Cougars. Piedmont finished 2-8 overall and 1-2 in region play. Work will begin for the 2017 season in coming weeks for returning players.
