Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Joyce Henderson Lindsay

Monticello native Elizabeth “Betty” Joyce Henderson Lindsay passed away on June 15, 2016, in Bethesda, Md.

A memorial service and interment will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Monticello Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Betty was born October 20, 1933. Her mother, the late Daisy Belle “Blossom” Henderson, was a member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church for 77 years and a longtime organist. Her father, the late Charles Lee Henderson, ran several businesses, including the Monticello Cold Storage Company.

A graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, Betty taught in the DeKalb and Cobb County schools and married Joseph Lindsay Jr. of Clemson, S.C. She later earned her master’s degree in women’s studies at George Washington University and worked as a family therapist. For nearly 20 years, she owned a yarn store in Bethesda and helped develop and market naturally colored wool from the Shetland Islands, which she visited often and loved dearly.

She is survived by her husband; her sister, Mary Ann Henderson Johnson; her children Lee Lindsay Wittenstein, Joseph Wade Lindsay, and Robert Andrew Lindsay.

Betty was adored by five grandchildren, one great- grandchild, a niece, and two nephews.

The family requests that memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be made to Doctors Without Borders.
