Jr. Pro Cougars Complete Season
Piedmont Academy’s Jr. Pro football team wrapped up its 2016 season last week with a pair of games.
The young Cougars hosted Creekside Christian Academy on Oct. 6 falling 20-14 in a game which was close throughout the contest.
Piedmont was held scoreless in the first half as Creekside scored once. The Cougars made some adjustments at halftime and the defensive stepped up in the second half.
Ridge Stroud once again made several tackles for loss and helped limit Creekside to one touchdown in the game’s second half.
In the fourth quarter, Hudson Reed broke free on a 42-yard touchdown.
The defense then held and the Cougars took possession once again and mounted a 62-yard drive, which was capped by a 22-yard run by Mason Owens.
Drew Maddox added the two-point conversion to bring Piedmont to within a score.
An onsides kick attempt failed, however, and Creekside was able to run out the remaining time on the clock.
Offensive leaders were Reed with 73 total yards and Owens with 35. Both scored touchdowns.
Stroud paced the defense with five tackles, three behind the line of scrimmage. Owens also had five tackles.
Two days later the young Cougars faced Eagles Landing in another home contest.
Facing its most powerful opponent of the season, Piedmont struggled offensively and eventually fell 48-0.
Fifth grader Sean Davis and Maddox, a sixth grader, led the defense.
Coaches said the team kept a positive attitude and never gave up despite facing a superior opponent.
After the game the players had a pizza party and were able to reflect on the season.
The team finished with a 2-4 record and was able to set a strong foundation for the future of Piedmont football, coaches said.
