John Wesley Bassett, Jr.

John Wesley Bassett, Jr., age 92, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

John Bassett was born in Jacksonville, Fla. to the late John Wesley Bassett, Sr. and Helen Ambrose Bassett. He lived in Decatur until moving to Monticello in 1994. Before retirement, he worked as a Senior Tech for WAGA Fox 5 in Atlanta for 42 years.

John Bassett served in the U. S. Navy as a Boatsman 2nd class from 1942 until 1947. He served on the USS Wyoming, the USS Zircon and the Destroyer USS Purdy. During World War II, while serving on the Purdy, it was attacked by 30 Japanese kamikaze planes. Fifteen sailors were killed during the attack and 25 seriously wounded.

He was an active member of New Rocky Creek Baptist Church, American Legion Post 110, and the Coffee Club.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Blanton Bassett; daughter, Angie Jones; son, David Blanton Bassett; and his brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his son and daughter, Wesley (Dodi) Bassett of Social Circle, Melissa (Jerry) Thomason of Monticello; grandchildren, Cassandra Jones, Camilla Felix, Nicole Ratteree, Alexandria Drake, and Alicia Bassett; great- grandchildren, Katie Felix, Mary Leigh Felix, Emily Felix, and Kaelyn Williamson; and sister, Barbara Cleveland of Merrill, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at the chapel of Jordan Funeral Home. Interment will be held in West View Cemetery. Dr. Randal Reese will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Williamson, Jr., Jeff Williamson, Sr., Kenneth Mason, Alan Small, William Mann, and Joey Plymel.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to New Rocky Creek Baptist Church 190 Rocky Creek Road, Mansfield, Ga. 30055; or Piedmont Academy, P. O. Box 231, Monticello, Ga. 31064.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, at Jordan Funeral Home.
