Veteran Player Wins Contest

DAVID LEACH, JEAN WORKMAN

Jean Workman doesn’t take The Monticello News football contest as seriously as her husband, Stone, or son, Phillips, do, but she knows how to pick winners.

Mrs. Workman beat out both her husband and son, along with more than 125 other players last week in an upset-ridden week, to win the weekly contest. For her effort she picked up a $25 prize from David Leach, owner of Monticello Drugs, sponsor of the week along with his wife’s business Dana Leach Realty.

Mr. Workman said he has never won, but their son, Phillips, has. Although the younger Mr. Workman graduated from Jasper County High School some five years ago, he has taken the contest with him to Clemson and now to UGA. He has former roommates that love to play, too.

Stone Workman was sure he was supposed to be the winner, not his wife. But, alas, Mrs. Workman outfoxed them all.

Mrs. Workman’s name has been added to the grand prize honor roll for a chance to win Chick-Fil-A/Peach Bowl tickets. No one else had their name added to the honor roll, as 12 right is usually the minimum to make honor roll. However, the weekly winner is always added to the list.

Mrs. Workman is proof you don’t have to be a star prognosticator to win the contest. Sometimes lots of knowledge pays off; other times it doesn’t really help.

This year has seen several new players and it’s not too late to join the fun. This week offers 15 more contests for players to choose the winners, and one smart, or lucky, player will pick up a $25 prize from Larry’s 4-Way, sponsor of the week.

Remember to write legibly and submit your entry in person, 247 West Washington Street, by fax, 706-468-6576 or e-mail, into@themonticellonews.com no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 7. Full details are on contest page 9.
