Lady Canes Earn a Region Bye

The Monticello Lady Hurricanes will enter the 8-AA region tournament, which begins tomorrow, September 30, as the #2 seed with a first-round bye and automatic bid to the Georgia High School Association’s state tournament starting October 12.

An 11-0 win over the Putnam County Lady War Eagles Tuesday gave the Lady Canes a lift in the region and state tournaments. Headed into their last region competition Tuesday, the varsity squad was in a three way tie with Elbert and Oglethorpe as Social Circle stood solidly atop the rankings undefeated in the region.

The Lady Canes will play their last game of the season tomorrow at Jackson beginning at 5 p.m. The Lady Red Devils are non region opponents so the outcome will not affect the team’s region standings. With that said, the Lady Canes will begin region play Tuesday, Oct. 4 against the winner of Elbert vs. Banks beginning at 2 p.m. at Social Circle High School.

Against the Lady War Eagles, the Lady Canes began to dominate quickly with the match called in the fifth inning. Lauren Mosley was on the mound.

Hits were reined in by Mia Jenkins with four, Lacey Rutledge with two and Mackenzie Tripp, one. Mosley and Abbott sisters, Madison and Kenzie, each had a walk. M. Abbott and Jenkins each had three runs batted in (RBIs) and Jesse Caron added two while Jenkins, K. Abbott, and Shiane Reed each had three quality at bats (QABs).

In the 2-1 region win over Rabun County last Thursday, M. Abbott had a big game coming up with three hits, three QABs, one RBI, and a walk. Reed earned two hits and two QABs. Pitcher O’Neal Sealy earned four strikeouts in addition to one RBI.

The Lady Canes suffered a 5-1 loss to Houston County last Wednesday despite both teams having nearly the same number of hits. However, the Lady Canes’ five errors to Houston’s sum of zero made the difference. Rutledge and Reed each recorded two hits.
